Thrissur: In a remarkable show of solidarity for palliative care, the Compassionate Kerala Walkathon was jointly organized by the Students Association of Palliative Care (SAPC) and Alpha Palliative Care on the occasion of World Hospice and Palliative Care Day. The event, held in Thrissur, saw an overwhelming turnout of 4,500 students from 100 educational institutions across the district, making it a spectacular success.
The walkathon was flagged off by Shri Elangovan IPS, the Police Commissioner, marking the beginning of a major awareness campaign to promote palliative care across Kerala. After the walk, a convention was held at Thrissur's iconic Thekkinkaad Maidan, which was inaugurated by His Excellency M.K. Varghese, the Lord Mayor of Thrissur.
During the convention, the ambitious Compassionate Kerala action plan was unveiled. The plan aims to establish hospices in all 14 districts and palliative link centers in every town, all to be owned and operated by community volunteers from local areas. The ultimate goal is to create a state free from pain and distress, with compassionate care available for all.
A solemn pledge was taken by all participants to work tirelessly toward realizing these objectives without discrimination based on race, religion, caste, creed, political affiliation, or socio-economic background. The initiative reflects a collective vision to build a compassionate and inclusive Kerala, where every person in need of palliative care receives support and dignity
